NEW YEAR'S DAY (»õÇØ Ã¹³¯)

On New Year's Eve, people hold parties which last until late into the night. It is traditional to greet the new year at midnight and celebrate the first minutes of the year in the company of friends and family. People may dance, sing, and of course watching parades and football games.

Americans have big parties on New Year's Eve. Children are often permitted to stay up until midnight, when "Old Father Time" (with a long white beard) is replaced by the baby(dressed only in diapers).

NEW YEAR'S DAY (¼³³¯)


This is one of the two biggest holidays in Korea where the New Year is celebrated twice. While January 1st is still an official holiday, most families make the cross-country trip to their hometowns for the Lunar New Year, which falls in late January or early February.

The menu for this day varies from region to region and family to family, but common to every table is tteokguk, a soup of slices of rice cake in beef or chicken broth. Koreans say that eating tteokguk means eating another year.

The first thing done in the morning on New Year's Day is to perform
Charye. It means a ritual to pay one's respects to their ancestors.
